Drumderg Diary

Name: Web-master
Date: 17th November
Comments: Monday night was the first band practice we have had in a few months with a very good attendance by the boys of the band. The band-master has picked 4 or 5 new tunes for next season, this year I can't complain about any of them. He has also organized a trip to Glasgow 17th January to watch Rangers and play in the association club, should be a bit of crac.
No Surrender

Parade: Pride of the valley, Moira
Date: October 4th
Comments: Well folks that's the marching season over for another year and with the cold wet nights here already I feel relieved. That is the first time that I have played in Moira and I will definitely look forward to playing there next year DV.

With the bandmaster (duck) on his holidays for this year, it was left to me to organize the band for the weekend. I thought to myself how hard can this be, surely it being the last parade all the boys would be up for it, how wrong I was. Tuesday night I started to ring round all the boys and girls, this take's me about 2 hours. Great I thought to my self, 10 drummers a possible 11, 2 big drummers 25 fluters and a few who didn't know yet. You would all agree this would have been a good size of a band to end the season with. Thursday night one of our boys who was in the didn't know category, sent me a text message to say he couldn't make it, fair enough I said.

Friday nobody contacted me. Saturday was a totally different story, one of the bass drummers Pulled out at 3.pm, so I asked him for his uniform, strap and sticks so I could get one of our lads to fill in for him (fluter 26) and he agreed to leave them with one of the boys. OK I thought that's one down, in case anybody needs a left i'll phone, so I phoned the ones that said on Tuesday, they were going but needed a left. First to fall was our number 3 fluter who said he wasn't going and neither was number 16 fluter. So I was down to 21 fluters, I thought surely that will be it, wrong again. On my way to the parade the drummer who was going to try his best, just couldn't make it but that was OK because I still had ten, wrong again. I found out that 4 drummers failed to show, one sent me a text message at 7.30pm saying he wasn't coming. 6 regular drummers how pathetic is that. So I made it up to 7 with number 7 fluter who is an excellent drummer and is waiting to get a drum with the band. That left me with 21 and 7, OK I thought let's go its 8.30pm, wait a minute there's one missing! so I rang to see were he was" I'm in Belfast and not going to the parade ". By this time I was really angry with some of the attitudes from the boys in the band. I called him a few names and hung up the phone.

19 and 7, wrong again 2 boys who were previously not going turned up and we were back to 21 flutes. The band played extremely well and a big thank you to all who made an effort to get out for the last parade but the story doesn't end there. One of our lads who said he wasn't going because he was away all day, was at the parade following an other band up the street. All I can say to him it's not good enough, if you cannot play with your own band don't go to the parade, it only causes bad feeling within the band.

No wonder the bandmaster is going grey; it has to be one of the most on appreciated jobs. The time and effort put in to organizing the band and then to have some boys let you down at the last minute is really sickening.
HERE'S TO ALL THE BANDMASTRER'S AND YOUR THANKLESS JOB

Parade: Fermanagh Young Loyalists
Date: 26th September
Comments: Enniskillen was the host town for the parade on Friday night. It has been a while from Drumderg has paraded Enniskillen, it must be something like eight to ten years from we were last there. I had forgotten its a brilliant town for a parade with narrow streets that bounce the sound of the drums back to the band.

A superb performance from our boys on Friday night and I must say that the fluters were excellent; they have really impressed me this last few weeks despite their numbers.
The turnout included: 21 fluters, 12 drummers,2 big drummers, 3 flags and 0 drum major

Parade: South down D U P
Date: 19th September
Comments: Friday night we were back in Rathfriland for the South down D U P parade. I know I have been going on a bit about the lads that don't attend and haven't praised the ones that do. There is always the boys the bandmaster knows he can count on going to the majority of the parade's. Only for these people we would struggle to keep the band on the road. if you click this link you will see who these people are (turnout).
The band is playing extremely well at the minute despite some of our boys not attending. It was great to have all of our bass drummers out and playing well. I have seen drummers drop sticks regularly and very rarely see bass drummers drop their's. But on Friday night, I witnessed in the middle of a tune and with out missing a beat, our number two dropped one of his sticks and then proceeded to stand on It. Not only did he drop it once but he did it again and then blamed our number 3 for it.

The turnout included: 22 fluters, 11 drummers,3 big drummers, 2 flags and 1 drum major
Congratulations to our drum major for getting a first .

Parade: Star of Maghera Newcastle
Date: 13th September
Comments: Newcastle was a great parade and I do like parading there, but it was a disappointing turnout from our fluters, 15 missing. It's always the same with a big band, people sit back and take it easy expecting others to do the work. Then there's others who start messing about and before you know it discipline has totally collapsed . Despite the fact we had 19 fluters on parade they played their hearts' out and sounded just as good as I've heard this year. There is an old saying in the flute band circles " we play better with a small band" and it seemed to be true on Saturday night. The drum corps was as good as ever but things can still be improved on. Still only one regular Big drummer and number 26 fluter covered because our stand in big drummer was sick but still managed to attend (a special thanks to him ).
The turnout included: 19 fluters, 12 drummers,2 big drummers, 4 flags and 0 drum major

Parade: Downshire
Date: 12th semptember
Comments: Downshire's annual parade on Friday night was absolutely brilliant. It would have been great if we had 30 flutes with us but it was not to be. We had 22 on the night, which wasn't too bad I suppose but could be better. The drum corps has attended rightly this year and Friday night was no different. Only one of our regular big drummers on parade. Number 1 big drummer has hurt his arm and he might not make the rest of the season, its a big loss to us. number 2 big drummer was away for the weekend so number 5 fluter stepped in and covered for them. Their is only a few more parades left and we want to finish the season with some good turnout, it's up to you.
The turnout included: 22 fluters, 14 drummers,2 big drummers, 5 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Hillhaven
Date: 6th september
Comments: Hillhaven's annual parade on Saturday night was a great event. Drumderg were down in numbers because some of the lads decided not to go to the parade and had a bit of a night out but what can you do. Over the year we have had a few critics who think that Drumderg have improved because we got a few boys from two bands that have broken up. If anything Saturday night proved those critics wrong. We had two members from these bands on parade and I think the band was playing extremely well. Yes, it's nice to get a few new members but we do not like to see loyalist bands go off the road. Unfortunately it's a fact of life that these things happen for whatever reason. All credit has to go to the bandmaster who has a very difficult job keeping the band on the road. When some boys decide not to go to the parade at the last minute, it only puts more pressure on him (he must not feel appreciated at times). I know sometimes I add to his job as bandmaster but you do need someone to cry about things that need done. This includes the discipline within the band. Some of the members of the band even take every opportunity to criticize. When it comes to fixing the problem they are no where to be seen. They turn a blind eye and will not report to the officers of the band the person who offends. Band rules must be enforced for the band to survive. I believe that this is where some bands have failed in the past and we must learn from past mistakes. NO SURRENDER.
The turnout included: 26 fluters, 11 drummers,2 big drummers, 4 flags and 1 drum major.

Parade: Black Saturday
Date: 30th August
Comments: We had the pleasure of leading Lisburn true blues to the field, who also provided a sit down dinner for the band. In all my years with the band I have to say that this Lodge has to be one of the best, in the way they treat the band and it's a real joy to take then.
Black Saturday is the last big day out for Drumderg, so we expected a big turnout from the boys and we weren't disappointed. 29 flutes, we had the pleasure of two of the old boys stephen and davy, that gave us 31 for most of the they until Davy was told that he had to go home with his wife.12 drummers, because of the lead drummer not being able to drum at the minute, the bandmaster is still carrying out the role as lead drummer, number 6 fluter was drumming as well. I thought the band was just all right. The drum corps were up to their old tricks again, there must be a competition to see who can break the most sticks.
I think at the end of the day the total was 7 sticks broke. Amazingly the drummer who breaks the most sticks hasn't broke one from Londonderry. 2 big drummers, with our number 1 going home early, it gave our stand in big drummer a chance to show us what he is made of.
Great day enjoyed by all I hope.

Parade: South Down Defenders
Date: 29th August
Comments: Newry was the location for the South Down Defenders annual parade. over the years this parade has forced to change its route because the majority catholic/nationalist/republican people do not wish to let the protestant people celebrate their culture. its great to see South Down Defenders willing to stay put and not give in to what I can only described as bigotry from the nationalist people of Newry.
12 drummers 29 flutes in 4 flags 3 big drummers, it's great to have number 2 back with us. we got a few mentions
first blood and thunder (kick the Pope has we called it in his gone by)
first B&T Drum Corps
first Style & Appearance
second Marching & Discipline
second Overall
third Bass Drum
Not to bad as long as we remember that every band has its day at the top, and if we want to remain up there with the rest we as a band must retain our discipline and standard and not things slip. Things have a tendency when you are going well to relax and before you know it your are back at where you started. The key to a good band is discipline.

Show me a man who cannot be bother to do the little things, and I'll show you a man who cannot be trusted

Parade: Annalong Single Star
Date: 16th August
Comments: Annalong has changed the parade route for the second year running, but I must say I do like it. its a real change to walk down by the sea for part of the parade . 11 drummers 2 big drummers 22 flutes 1 drum major. There was no flags in Annalong, It's a really big loss to the band not to have even one flag on parade, it just seems very bare. The colour party has done extremely well this year, with only one original girl from last year number 1 flag girl. numbers 2 and 3 have been with us from the start of the year and have been brilliant, are real asset to Drumderg's color party. Two other girls joined the band in the middle of the season. It's great to see the girls letting the flags fly, I know that it's not easy on windy days from my experience carrying a flag in a few parades in keady.

Comments: we had the short trip over to Portadown on Friday night for the Defenders parade. 26 flutes meant that we could Walk in rows of 5. I thought the band was playing OK but not at its best, I'm sure some of the band would disagree with me,but it,s only my opinion. 13 drummers on the night number 1 drummer is still out but hopefully he will be back soon. 2 big drummers on the night, number 2 big drummer from what I hear might be back next week. 4 flags and 1 drum major.

Parade: Just a night out
Date: 14th August
Comments: Thursday night some of the boys had a bit of a night at the go-carts. the standard of driving was absolutely horrendous. the first race of the night had a past member of the band in it, he had nearly finished the first lap and was on the last corner when number 14 fluter pushed him in to the tyer wall. if this was the only occasion number 14 fluter (doser) had done this I could forgive him but it wasn't. He put me in the same wall and in the final he wrecked the bandmasters chances of winning.
He wasn't the only one to go on a wrecking mission, number 8 fluter was just as bad,but he got his comeuppance when the bandmaster took him out in the last race. I for one was happy to see this as he done the same to me. The race was won by our number 2 fluter, with some superb driving as usual, second was number 14 fluter Doser, third was the bandmaster who in my opinion could have given number 2 fluter the winner a real race in the final but for the wrecking mission of DOSER.

Parade: Apprentice Boys
Date: 9th August
Comments: We had the pleasure of leading Bessbrook Apprentice Boys of Derry on Saturday, so it was a very early start for us 6.45am. we arrived in Bessbrook about 7.30am and it was straight off the bus at the orange hall to walk Bessbrook . number 13 drummer was that excited about parading with the band he burst the head of his drum. number 14 drummer didn't get out of his bed in time to walk Bessbrook, so that left us with 10 drummers 3 big drummers 25 flutes 5 flags in Bessbrook.
back on the bus the bandmaster was working with number 13's drum putting a new head in it, number 14 drummer had managed to get himself out of bed and we picked him up on the road to omagh. we got into omagh about 9.45am, the bandmaster had fixed number 13's drum all we needed now was a Fry and a cup of tea. spent about 30 to 40 minutes in Omagh and it was back on the bus for Londonderry.
on arriving in Londonderry we paraded down to the start of the parade and within 30 minutes we were off. Our stand in big drummer was helping out (fluter 6), you might have seen our number 2 big drummer carrying the spare heads behind the band,he's still useful.
got up to the town center and had just started to play lily-o and derry walls when we came across a sign saying "to stop playing at the next point" a few steps down the road the sign said"stop playing now". in my opinion it's not very professional too stop playing a tune in the middle so we didn't. we had Apprentice Boys telling us to stop playing we had policeman telling us to move on. at least we got ourselves on the news. one of the boys in the band said he seen the ex-leader of the SDLP in the center of the town,no doubt he was there to see how much he could be offended by the Apprentice Boys and bands, something to cry about.
finished the parade about 3.00pm and that was us for the day.watch some of the parade and then at 4.45pm got back on the bus for Armagh. on the way back to Armagh some nice wee catholic broke the window of the bus. 12 drummers 25 flutes 3 big drummers 5 flags 1 drum major.

Comments: Monday night parades are as good as a band practice, so the bandmaster tells us. Downpatricks parade is a bit like our own (watch by the parades commission) and have to be very careful and watch that the parade goes off without a hitch. the band went extremely well in spite of the fact there was a lot of starting and stopping in the parade. 8 drummers 2 big drummers 20 flutes 3 flags not bad for a Monday night. our lead drummer is out for the rest of the season because he has broken his arm.

Comments: Was really looking forward to Clogher's parade because I hoped the boys would put on the same show as they put on in kilkeel, but I was very disappointed with some of the boys who said they would be there but never turned up. I don't think we are different than any other band trying to get members out, but when you turn up for a parade and some of the lads let the band down its very disheartening. but then again , I was talking to a past member today and he was saying in his day they considered 22 and 11 to be a brilliant turn out . its probably because I have been spoiled this year ,and when you go from rows of 5 to rows of 4 its a big change . 11 drummers 2 big drummers 3 flags 1 drum major

Comments: A brilliant turnout from our boys at the MYD parade on Friday, 15 drummers 3 big drummers 26 flutes 5 flags 1 drum major. we also had our number 2 big drummer backed, I personally thought he was mad but who am I, before the parade he would usually give me his keys and Friday was no exception. the only problem was I brought then back to Armagh with me (Sorry). number 1 and 3 big drummers both burst a head. a part from that the band was playing extremely well keep it up

Comments: Bessbrook was the first time the band has walked in rows of five at a band parade and will take abit of getting used to. because our number 2 big drummer is still out and are number 3 wasn't there, we had to make do with our stand in big drummer. we got a few mentions at the trophies but don't ask me, I wasn't listening but I will find out off the bandmaster, as he has then on his computer and hopefully he will put them on a disk for me.

Number 2 big drummer has hurt his knee , and by the look of him will not be back this year with the band .

Date: JULY 14
Comments: Thank goodness we had a rest on Sunday before parading Scarva on Monday. With the weather on Saturday so hot it really takes it out of you ,but these things most be done. when I got to Gilford I had the feeling that we were in for a real soaken. just as we were about to move, the rain started but it wasn't that bad just a drizzle .we finished Gilford with no excitement and got on the bus for Scarva. 14 drummers 30 fluters,I've never seen Drumderg with so many fluters. The second biggest band in Scarva ,pride of the hill had something like 16 drummers 31 fluters. We arrived in Scarva to the sound of thunder ,and it wasn't a flute band it was the natural kind of thunder with the flashing of lightning as well but didn't come any were near the parade, we had another hot really hot day.

Another real peaceful Protestants day in Scarva which you would never hear about in the media .

Parade: The Twelfth
Date:
Comments: The Twelfth was an early start for us as we had the privilege of leading markethill district number 10 to the field . We were down in numbers as some of our members wanted to walk with their own Lodges, and the 5 boys who joined us from the Fusiliers were parading with them on the Twelfth . it was great to see the Fusiliers out on the Twelfth ,looking well and sounding just as good .
As I was saying we had a early start ,and our stand in big drummer forgot his strap , but it was OK because he had someone to blame.(If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame). So someone was sent back to Armagh to get the strap and we were ready to go .

two runs for us on the Twelfth meant that once we arrived at the field, it was straight back to meet up with our own Lodge. Drumderg have 21 members of the band who are also members of the orange , something that we as a band are keen to promote and would encourage all young bands people to get involved with . Markethill definitely put on the best Twelfth in recent years . With everything been so peaceful it can only get better, republicans are out to show us up in a bad light, don't give then the opportunity to blacken our name .

Comments: With 2 of our big drummers away on holidays,we had our spare big drummer ready for the job(number 5 flute). But because of his search for a suntan and getting burned alive couldn't do the job we had asked of him.so what we're we to do? That's right we have the big drummer from the fusiliers in the band inching to get going (number 27 flute)and I think he was first class .

Comments: Saturday night we met at Armagh orange hall to get the double decker . its the first time I have been on the bus this year, I was surprise to find that it has TV'S .it will only be a matter of time before some bright spark will bring a video of the band and make us watch it. so off we went to Portadown for the true blues parade . we like many other bands there on the night could only manage to do some of the parade, because of Kilkeel was on the same night , and apologize to the blues for this. 11 drummers 23 flutes 2 big drummers no flags 1 drum major .
The reason number 2 big drummer wasn't there is because, from what I could hear , he was going for a RUN . I think that's what I heard. HAHA

Then it was off to kilkeel for ballinran's parade. we had not as many as we had in Portadown. 11 drummers 20 flutes 2 big drummers 2 flags . our drum major who won first prize on the night , that's his second this year not to bad for the wee lad . Thanks to the local bands that do not have band parades themselves but came to support us anyway, and the bands who come back year after year .We know that the parade route it self is not much compared to KVFB/POTH/EBPB ,but the members of Drumderg are determined to keep a parade in Keady. If Drumderg were to walk away from Keady that would be the end of band parades in the town .38 band's paraded on the night ,and we had 2 bands who didn't parade . Parade: Portadown mini 12th/Armagh
Comments: Saturday night was a fairly early start for the band (6.15pm)in Portadown for there mini 12th . We had the pleasure of taking LOL 127 Parkmount around a pact portadown .it's great to see so many people turn out for the mini 12th in portadown .13 drummers 2 big drummers 25 flutes 4 flags and 1 drum major .number 2 big drummer burst a head in the middle of the parade, but between the two big drummers they managed too put in a new head in really quick time. when they got back to the band the drum was ringing like the bells of your nearest church of Ireland, but they soon had it's sorted out .

Then it was off to Armagh.
we gathered at our usual spot beside the museum, where our number 3 big drummer had his name taken by the p-patrol who were out in force .There are 5 members of Drumderg who have been waiting patiently for 18 years to walk Armagh in a band like Drumderg had out on Saturday night . when the 5 of us first joined the band in 1985 Drumderg was nowhere like the band you see today. A few years after joining the band the current bandmaster took on the role as bandmaster and with the help of some of the older members and some members who have now left ,started to push Drumderg Forward . It has not been easy especially a band coming from south Armagh ,were you have the local people who would like to see Drumderg off the road all together, but may be that's been the "5" motivation to keep the band on the road in a sort of a two fingered salute to those that don't like us .
Back to Saturday night in Armagh,16 drummers 3 big drummers 27 flutes 4 flags 1 drum major and 1 in training.the band was playing extremely well I'll say that again playing extremely well .the band master bought 20 sets of new drumsticks during the week "the worst drumsticks ever bought".we had just started our first tune and one of the sticks he was using the head snapped clean off . I am the first to criticize drummers for hitting the side of their drums and breaking sticks but those sticks are outrageous. That was the first drumstick of the night to break , if anybody needs sticks for the fire there's 5 sticks on the road at the traffic lights at the top of the mall in ARMAGH.as I've said before great performance by the members of the band on Saturday night .

Parade: pride of the hill
Comments: Friday night we were at pride of the hill Rathfriland. It's a great town for a parade except for them hill's, their a real nightmare to walk up, and on top of walking up the side of a mountain there was the heat! As we were walking around and non of our drummers had managed to break any sticks I thought to myself we will get round at least one parade without any drummers breaking any sticks.but low and behold number 11 drummer spoiled my optimism, but amazingly it was only one drummer on the night.12 drummers 3 big drummers 25 flutes 4 flags and not forgetting the drum major a very, good turn out for the band on Friday night .
we got a few mentions.

Parade: pride of the maine
Comments: pride of the maine's parade on saturday night, longer trip than usual for us (1 hour and 20 minutes) and I didn't even feel sick .the band got off the bus and paraded down to the starting point without march ceremony. except number 11 drummer breaking a drum stick before we even started the parade .when will drummers ever learn that if you hit the center of the drum and not the side of the drum you will never break sticks,if they would only listen to me (I'M RIGHT).the band I thought was going better than Friday night and got a few trophies to prove it,congratulations to the flag girl's for their win keep hit up .it took us 1 hour 45 minutes to walk around a shorter parade than we remember parading in Ballymena but still a great parade .

Parade: KILCLUNEY
Comments: First of all can I congratulate KILCLUNEY on such a well organized parade and for the biggest parade in co.Armagh. Drumderg decided to get away early to beat the queue of bands that would be in markethill, and we were right to do so 70 bands at the parade, great to see so many turn out.including some of the local armagh bands who always come out for a wee run before the 12th.
Drumderg had 15 drummers 26 flutes and 5 flags in the markethill nearly a full turn out for ourselves.the band was playing well I thought but not as good as last week .hopefully number 6 flute remembers to bring his heckle for his hat tonight.

Parade: Bangor , junior orange
Comments: Saturday we were in Bangor for the junior orange annual parade. we were down in the number of drummers we had, so the bandmaster and number 6 fluter were sent forward to drum, well if they know the stuff we might as well use them .so that left us with 9 drummers 20 flutes 2 flags, not to bad for a relaxing day by the sea .the seven boys who were in the shop watching Rangers win, and were late back for the parade, the bandmaster has told me to say that it's not good enough and not to do the like of it again!

Saturday night we were in pomeroy for their short parade. It's great to see pomeroy true blue's refusing to give in to republicans who want to push protestants out of pomeroy. There was an attack on a orange hall in pomeroy this year and it's not the first time that republicans have attacked this orange hall .
10 drummers 20 flutes 3 flags and 1 big drummer, so we had number 5 flute give the big drummer a bit of a hand, and don extremely well I thought one for the future of Drumderg.

Comments: Friday night we were first of all in the Moy for Derrylee's parade .then it was down to Dromore for kinallen's parade were we met up with our number 2 big drummer(the pig),Who had been missing for a few weeks, but it's great to have him back. it's well seen he has had a rest busting the head of the big drum ,that's the second this year for the pig.12 drummers 25 flutes 3 big drummers and 4 flags was a good turn out for us. The band overall was in good form and playing extremely well I thought and the tuning of the flute has made a great difference

Comments: Monday night, instead of band practice we were in richhill for Ballytrone's parade. The bandmaster always said that "Monday night band Parades are as good as a band practice" and of course he was proved right, with nearly a full turn out from the boys, with drummer 8 turning up with out his uniform or drum .12 drummers 25 flute and color party of two,not to bad for a Monday night parade.

Comments: Back at Makethill on friday night for Mullabrack's annual parade, thank goodness the rain stayed away, I thought we were in for a real soaken. We had a few more drummers this week 14 in all and with the lead drummer back from his holiday, it seemed to go just a wee bit smoother. It's been some time since our lead drummer has broken a stick but drummer 3 seems to do this on a regular basis, 3 sticks this year. Only 20 flutes out this week but going very well I thought .

Comments: It looks like the band master is not going to use this page I have set up for him, so I will do my best to gave you a report on how things are going for Drumderg.
Friday night saw us in Markethill and Rathfriland it was at cold night but we soon warmed up .10 side drummers and 21 flute 2 big drummers and not forgetting the 4 flag girls in markethill . a few of our boys met us in Rathfriland and the bamdmaster decided he was going to lead drummer . I thought the band was playing well but there is still a lot of things we can do a lot better .

Parade: Sectarian attack
Comments: Several churches and church halls have been damaged during attacks in Keady in south Armagh.
In the attacks on Saturday night, paint was thrown and windows were broken at the Church of Ireland hall, the mission hall and the Orange hall on Crossmore Road.
Three stained glass windows were broken at Keady Second Presbyterian Church on Davis Street and the adjoining parish hall was also damaged.
The buildings targeted all belong to Protestant denomination churches.

The caretaker at the Presbyterian church, said it was a blow for the congregation.
"We had just had a re-opening service a fortnight ago. That was after redecorating the whole inside of the church and putting carpet down.
"The carpet and the glass have been damaged. It is very disappointing.
