Parade: SOUTH FERMANAGH LOYALISTS F.B
Comments: Friday 24th saw us head down to Enniskillen for our last parade of the season and we certainly went out with a bang. I got got a lift down with one of the other lads cause the was bus staying for the disco and got home about four in the morning . We had a big band out band out- 15 drummers, 31 fluter, 2 bass drummers, 3 colour party and the drum major. Thought the band was amazing tonight and the bass drum was excellent. It was a great parade route with a good crowd about. Saw East Belfast after and were going well as usual. There was 28 bands in attendance including the hosts making this their biggest parade yet. After the parade the trophies were give out and as far as I know we got a well desearved 1st in Blood & Thunder. So thats the season over for another year. The band has been very consistant throughout the year and without doubt one of the top three in Ulster. We will be back next year, bigger and better than ever before! Cant wait already.

NO SURRENDER

Parade: SOUTH DOWN DUP

Comments: Friday 17th we headed up to Rathriland for SD,DUP parade. I arrived at about eight, but as usual our bus didnt arrive to about an hour later. It was absolutely freezing up on that hill so I was glad to get parading. We moved of once we got the rest of the lads gathered up. Paraded with 25 flutes,12 drummers(I think), 2 bass drummers and 2 colour party. Thought the band was playing very well, especially in the square. Got a chance to see a few other bands when we finished. Poth were brilliant, as were EBPB but I thought Ballyhalbert were amazing for all the size of them. A good turnout of bands, 50 I heard. Congratulations to SDDUP on a brill parade.

Parade: Star of Down, Maghera
Date: 11/09/04

Comments:
Tonight we were of to Newcastle for Star of Downs parade. This is a great wee parade cause there’s always a few taigs about giving abuse. I went down in the car and arrived before the parade had started. It should have started but I think they had to wait for the fenians to come out of chapel first which was probably done on purpose to hold the parade up.

The bus as always was late arriving so we formed up straight away. We had 21 fluters, 10 drummers, 2 big drummers, 3 flags and 1 drum major which was a bit disappointing considering the turnout last night in Banbridge. But even with a smaller band we played well but could have been better. The playing conditions weren’t great as it was freezing and there was a really strong wind. A few hats were flyin about the place and the colour party had to take theirs off completely. The colour party had to eventually stop parading as they just couldn’t hold the flags. To be fair it was extremely windy and as we got to the end of the main street and turned the corner I thought the whole band was gonna be blown into the sea. A few of other bands that were on parade were East Belfast, Kilcluney, Donaghadee and Clogher.

As I was saying before there’s always a few taigs about will do anything to disrupt the parade. This prick went to great trouble to cause disturbance. He climbed his way to the top of a church and started ringing the bell and shouting abuse. This made no difference at all as it couldn’t be heard as the drums and flutes drowned it out, but you just had to laugh at this guy. All he managed to do was make a fool of himself. Its good that this band can still have a parade in a predominately republican town and show the taigs we aren’t going to go away just because they don’t like it.

So another successful parade with a good turnout of bands and a decent crowd out to watch.

The turnout included: 21 fluters, 10 drummers, 2 big drummers, 3 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Downshire Guiding Star F.B

Date: 10/09/04

Comments: On Friday night we headed for Banbridge to Downshires parade. This is a parade I always look forward to because it’s a great parade route and you go under a bridge were your usually allowed to stop and play a few tunes.

Most of the big guns were out tonight with Pride of the Hill and East Belfast having big turnouts. It had rained heavy non-stop all day so I was thinking we were gonna get soaked but thankfully it dried up in time for the parade. The cold night didn’t deter the turnout of spectators with a massive crowd lined along most of the route. There was a good turnout of bands from all over the province with the total number being around 60 I think.

So we started to gather up our wee band to parade and as usual we were late in starting as theres always one who holds us back, mainly it’s one of the bass drummers and its usually the one who has the bass drum which doesn’t help. Tonight we had 34fluters, 18 drummers, 3 bass drummers, 4 flags and drum major making us the biggest band there, so not a bad turnout then! Big isn’t always better but in our case it was cause the band was brilliant tonight. We also had a new fluter out tonight all the way from Belfast. So off we went and once we got goin we were rockin. You meet bands most of the way along this route so you have to be at ur best the whole way but the way we were playin no-one was gonna give us any problems though id say we gave a few other bands a bit of bother. We stopped under the bridge to entertain the crowd that had gathered under it. The place was vibrating, the sound was deafening and the crowd just loved it. Unfortunately we had to move of as we were holding the parade up so we paraded to the finish.

The whole band was fantastic tonight and I have to congratulate everyone one who paraded. I thought we were the best band there tonight but that’s just my opinion. Others who impressed me were Pride of the Hill, East Belfast and Dunamoney who I don’t see too often down this end of the country. Sowell done to Downshire for a great parade and I look forward to next years.

The turnout included: 34 fluters, 18 drummers, 3 big drummers, 4 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Black Saturday
Date: 28/09/04
Comments: Black Saturday Demonstration,

Comber (Co. Down)

Early start on Saturday morning for us as we headed to the Black Saturday Demonstration in Comber, Co. Down. We met on the mall for about 7:00am to make the trip down to Lisburn where we parade with Sprucefield RBP. We paraded round part of the town I think and then onto the bus again to go to Comber. Once we arrived we went into a restaurant for breakfast. The RBP we take kindly books the band a sit-down meal or breakfast every year that is greatly appreciated by the band and was enjoyed by everyone.

Then it was time for the main parade which I can’t remember much about cause I’m writing this on Christmas Eve and er well it didn’t exactly happen yesterday but I’l do my best!!!!!!!! So off we went with 26 fluters, 11 drummers, 2 big drummers, 3 flags and 1 drum major which was good with us having a few boys parading with their own Preceptory.

There was a good crowd about and the band was playing alright from what I remember. The route was very long and it was a warm day. We paraded to a field where the whole demonstration met up before parading out together making sure there was a continuous flow of bands and Preceptories which I think is a good idea and it makes the parade better to watch. We got to the main field for a rest and something to eat. I got to see a few other bands which included Portavogie, Pride of the Hill –Rathfriland, Clogher, Kilcluney and Downshire. So we lay about for a while until the parade was ready to move off again. So away we went with the band playing better than the parade in. The return route was shorter which was good cause we burst a head after we had passed most of the crowd. But worse was to come when approaching the end of the parade keys started flying of the bass drum. Even the bit that the keys screw into came off which didn’t help. So we finished parading and while we waited on our bus to appear (apparently the PSNI re-routed it or something) the bass-drummers put in a new head and got it fixed up as best they could for the parade in Lisburn. A few boys decided to have a go on different instruments in Lisburn and one of our fluters done colour party on his own cause the girls were tired after a long day. This was quite amusing for a number of reasons but the guys a bit of a nutter anyway!!! All in all a great day out.

That’s all I can remember. It’s hard to believe this happened four months ago; seems like it only happened yesterday but there you go time flys!!

I just like to add, I put one of my learner fluter out for the first time.

Parade: south down defender

Date: 27/7/04

Comments: Sorry the for delay of these few remaining reports, I have no excuse to give this time. I arrived in Newry for the parade about five past eight as requested by the bandmaster, but was told we would have to wait on our number 3 big drummer who was playing with SDD old boys band who were out for the first time. I didn't even know that he had been a past member of SDD (but you learn something new every day).

The old boys finished the parade and we gathered up, it was nice to have our three main big drummers back with us after their we break. it took us two are three tune to get in to the swing of things especially as our number 2 thought he was still in the old boys band and took off flying, but did slow down for us ( thank goodness does he not realize I'm not a young lad any more).

A special mention has to go to our member who after a four year absence has come back to the band, it is great to have them back in are ranks.

Newry is a parade, were you have to be playing at your best as soon as you leave the car park which we were. With a good turnout from the boys 28+14 we played well and I can't complain. Well done to all that made this parade another great success of the year.

The turnout included: 28 fluters, 14 drummers, 3 big drummers, 5 flags
and 1 drum major

Parade: Portavogie

Date: 20.08.04

Comments: I have to admit I wasn’t looking forward to the Portavogie parade, because of the journey up, but anyway I got myself together and got myself down to the bus. On the way up to Portavogie I remember thanking to myself “it must be hard for portavogie themselves, who do this trip every weekend to go to band parades all over the country”. And that thought just put a whole different perspective on this parade (Hats off to portavogie).

All our big drummers were away this weekend, so we had to use our two spare big drummer who are more than up to the job. The first thing they had to do was to get the bass in tune, because again it was me who put the heads in the drum (I haven't a clue what i'm doing).

The band played extremely well in portavogie and a big thanks to the two boys who were on the big drum well done.

Also a special mention to number 14 fluter who went home in a huff And wouldn't speak to me for almost a week, but thank goodness he got over it.

The turnout included: 20 fluters, 12 drummers, 2 big drummers, 4 flags
and 1 drum major

Parade: Tamnamore

Date: 18/08/04

Comments: On Wednesday night it was the turn of Tamnamore F.B. to host the parade, because this parade was on midweek the bandmaster canceled our Monday night practice which I always love getting off.

None of our regular big drummers were out on Wednesday night so we had to use our spare Boys to fill in for them, the two spare drummers are definitely up to the job, and that’s not a bad thing to have in your ranks. In Londonderry two bracket’s came off the drum, and it was left to me to fix over the week before the parade, which I did. The problem was when I popped the heads back in the drum; I hadn’t a clue how to get it in tune. So what I did was to put the heads back in and tighten it up as far as I could, the only problem with that was, it was ringing like the bells of your local Church of Ireland.

Luckily for me the two boys knew how to fix this problem, and soon had that drum in good shape, between the two of them, they ended up putting three heads in, and then Proceeded to burst the heads of Bessbrook drum. Thanks to Bessbrook

Our stand-in big drummers received a first place, and let’s hope it’s not the last.

Here is a wee photo that shows one of our Spare big drummers in training from an early age.

Parade: Apprentice Boys of Derry

Date: 14/8/04

Comments: For the second year in a-row we had the pleasure of leading Bessbrook Apprentice Boys of Derry. It’s an early start 6.30am But worth It when you consider we finish at 3.00pm and then we can do want we please.

After a quick stop in markethill to pick up a few of the boy’s we arrived in Bessbrook about 7.30am and it was straight off the bus at the orange hall to walk Bessbrook. The Apprentice Boys were already there waiting for us to arrive, so there was no messing around straight off the bus and on the road for the parade around Bessbrook. This took us About 30 minutes to complete, and then back in the bus and over To Omagh for our breakfast, and not forgetting the quick stop in Armagh to pick up the lead Drummer who was running a bit behind.

We arrived in Londonderry about 11.30am and paraded down to the starting point, oour bass drum was brilliant, which usually means it’s about to burst and I said to myself “I‘ll bet this head will go Just before we go up to the diamond”.

While we were waiting for the parade to start we watched some lads having a bit of a kick about at the bottom of the street, Good craic. But they must have lost about ten of their balls over the roofs of the Shops.

The start of the parade was a bit of a disaster because we didn’t have enough room to get the band in line, so we had to do that on the move which isn’t really a problem, it just doesn’t look very ggood.

It’s great to be one of the first bands across the bridge in Londonderry, but the bet I had with myself became absolutely “well almost” true. We where just coming off the bridge aand starting to make our way up to the first set of gates, when the head of the drum burst. Lucky for us on the day one of the boys from the band was carrying our Spare heads, (He Was just out of the hospital with his hand in plaster so he couldn’t play).
So anyway the 3 big drummers fell out of the band and put a new head in the drum.
The band could do nothing but walk on and play, and I must say it’s definitely different playing without the big drum, I was glad to see it back with us and going well.

It’s nice to see those people at the diamond this year again (they never miss).
The marshals were out in force this year stopping bands from playing so we don’t offend those who come to watch the parade every year. But you’re allowed to walk to the beat of the drums, wwhich we do (all the drums). We had to stop marching and finish the tune we are playing, before we moved on, I thought our big drummer Wasn’t going to gave us the beat, So I said to him come Let’s have it, but as usual he had his own plan of action and was just waiting for his right moment to swing in to aaction, the whole way round the diamond.

Finished the parade about 3.30pm aand that was us for the day

Parade: Portadown Defenders FB

Date: 13/8/04

Comments: Portadown Defenders FB annual parade was a week early this year, because they didn’t want to crash with portavogie’s band parade. Because it was the Friday before Londonderry we decided to get away early, so I could get home to my bed (didn’t even go to McDonald’s).

I thought the band was playing very well, and our new drummer seemed to fit in to our drum corps perfectly. I’m pleased with the performance in portadown and pleased with the numbers that turned up.

Comments: Cloghers parade is a great parade and one I looked forward to every year, but what really disappoints me is the turn out from our boys 22 flutes! It is not good enough, I’ve read on the internet reason Someone saying A big band is a lazy band, in our case It seem to be true. This is the second time I’ve had to write this report, first one was just slightly on the angry side and I decided not to publish it.

Parade: Mourne Young Defenders

Date: 06/08/04

Comments: I can’t believe it’s Mourne Young Defenders parade already, in another month are two the parade’s will be all over from another year. It was great to have a good band out for this parade and I thought we were playing well,

We met on the mall for seven, but it wasn’t until the 7.30pm that we managed to get away. The band-master got a phone call from one of the boys who was previously not planning to go to the parade because of work commitments, Saying that he was able to go to the parade after all but would need a lift. So the band-master being the person he is, got in his car and away he went, leaving me to sort out the bus and pick up some of the boys on the way up to markethill. Of course you should know by now I have the memory of a goldfish, and manage to forget one of the boys, so I had to get the bus to turn around and head back to Armagh to pick him up.

So already we were running behind schedule, we arrive in Markethill at about 7.55pm and I think it was about 10 minutes before we were on the road again. Some of the flutes that we never got tuned because their owners were on holidays, we tuned on the way up to kilkeel. it’s hard enough tuning flutes at the best of times, but when you’re on the bus and it’s swaying all over the place, its a bit of a nightmare, but we managed.

We arrived in kilkeel for about nine and were expecting to get straight off The bus
and go, sadly this wasn’t the case, because two of the three big drummers weren’t there yet and they had the durm. I think they were putting new heads in the drum before they came out to the parade, plus they didn’t tape The heads which slightly worried me, because I thought it was going to be ringing all night ( I was wrong again)

Our lead drummer who was already in kilkeel, was the last man to show up and on top of that forgot to bring his drumsticks. By this time the fluters were a wee bit on the cross side of things, but I consider this to be good for the band, because they play a lot better when they were all wound up like those little toys you get in McDonald’s (lol)

The band played very well In kilkeel on Friday night despite boys all being in a bit of a mood, well played all.

Parade: Red Hand Defenders, Downpatrick

Date: 02/08/04

Comments: Red Hand Defenders, Downpatrick Monday night, I think you could say we have a reasonable turnout, considering all those who don’t make the effort.

The band-master Decided to try and get away a bit earlier than usual and beat the queue that happens at the Downpatrick parade. We met outside Armagh orange hall at 6.30pm; I think we managed to leave Armagh about 6.45pm which isn’t too bad for us.
We left Armagh to The sound of thunder and I really did think we were going to get wet, but happily this wasn’t the case.

There was some home from there holidays, and I can safely say not one sent me a postcard! Well I Suppose I can understand not wanting to sit down and write Postcards on your holidays, but not even a bar of rock from the Airport, come on now, just a wee something would be nice (LOL).

We arrive in Downpatrick for about 8.30pm, and there was a few bands already on the road, but It wasn’t too long before we were ready for the off.

number 8 drummer was given the opportunity to do the big drum on Monday night, partly because, we had only one regular big drummer with us, but we did have one of our spare big drummers (fluter 26), but he very kindly gave way To let drummer 8 have his first parade on the big drum.

Another reason drummer 8 was given the chance to do the big drum, Was to celebrate his third place in the big lambeg competition on Saturday night in markethill, this is a great achievement for him.

Drummer 9, managed to get hold of a low tension drum on Monday night which he very kindly let us have for the night. We seem EBPB use a low tension drum at a band concert one night and thought it might be a good idea to try on the road some night, Monday evening was a perfect opportunity to try this. Brilliant we drum and very loud, but I think if we had 10 of these it would be far too loud. Then again that’s what some people are looking for in blood and thunder flute bands.

For the first time this year I remembered to bring the camera with me to get a few photographs, which surprisingly I manage to do, I got some really good photo's of the band and was going to use some with this report. But as you all should realize by now I’m an idiot, and on the way home from Downpatrick I was messing about with the camera and managed to delete all the photographs, (Sorry)

Parade: Defenders of the Rock FB, Lisbellaw

Date: 31/07/04

Comments: Saturday night we were away down To Lisbellaw for the Defenders of the Rock FB, Lisbellaw Annual parade.

We met At Armagh Orange hall at 7.00pm, I say 7.00pm, but you should all know by now it will be half and hour before most of our boy's will be there (and you would think I would Have Realized this by now). The two boy’s who traveled down from kilkeel, arrived about 7.40pm and that was us ready to move off.

When we were waiting on the mall for some of our boy’s to gather up, we were all Having a we chat, and one of the lads was telling me, a person who shall remain nameless, was accusing Drumderg of in some way trying to please Catholics in KEADY by keeping our parade there. This person went on to say, "that was the reason why Drumderg will not bring the parade to Armagh". Drumderg have been accused of many things over the years, But this one takes the biscuit, the logic behind this comment I can’t understand at all. But I have to give this person some credit, for having an active imagination; you have to give people credit for at least being original even though there comments are so ridiculous.

On we went To Lisbellaw Still having a good laugh about that one, I think it set the tone for the rest of the night because everybody was in real good form.

18 + 8 on the night, which isn’t really good enough of a turnout and a bigger effort from those who have a very weak excuse is needed. When you consider your band-master who recently had a newborn baby, yet he is there every week. But in saying that the band was playing well.

We were the second band to parade on the night which meant Halfway around the parade the Bessbrook band-master came and borrowed one of our big drummer’s (number 1), and he was more than happy to do it. He was saying on the way home that he didn't expect any help from our number 2 big drummer, but when he seen him Hurry back after he had finished with us, he said he was more than glad.

Parade: Bessbrook

Date: 30/07/04

Comments: On Friday we were over to another south Armagh band for their
annual parade in Bessbrook.
We were asked by the band-master to meet at 8:00pm (I was there on time) which usually means most of the boys Turn Up about 20 to 30 Minutes later.

With the our band-master and myself tuning all the flutes throughout the week, It was left to me to hand them out to the fluters, are As some of our rivals Like to call them (dummies), But for dummies they are not doing to bad this year, (who’s Jealous).
As I was saying, I was giving out the flutes, and one of the boys was telling me, he was giving his young daughter breakfast (weetabix) on the Saturday we went to Belfast. As young children do, she was playing with it at the same time, when his back Was turned she filled his flute full of weetabix. On the way out to the Parade he got his flute and noticed the weetabix, so he clean it out and off he went.

He’s said "it was the best my flute had been going all year", I must get a word with him and see which is better, With-abix or Without-abix.

The band is playing well at the minute, but there is still a lot of our boy’s away on holiday, hopefully within the next few weeks we will see them back in our ranks.

The big drum is going well, and so is our big drummers.

The drum corps is playing well, and so is the flute corps. The two tunes we put out over the twelfth are going well, but I think trip to tip is the better tune for us.

The flag girl’s are excellent the year, and as yet I haven’t been told off for anything I have said (happy days), the best marching part of the band.

Turnout included: 23 fluters, 12 drummers, 2 big drummers, 3 flags

Parade: Crimson Star

Date: 24/07/04

Comments: Back in east Belfast for the second time this year for the Crimson Star’s parade. This Is the first time that we have taken part in this parade, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.

We met on the mall for 1:00 pm, and made our way to east Belfast. one of the bandmasters Good friends from Belfast, was only to happy to give us directions to the parade, and our bandmaster was confident that he could find the start of this parade. He Almost got us to the start, but had to get Jim to direct us around the streets of east Belfast.

The band was playing well In Belfast, but the bandmaster ordered after the parade that All the flutes must be handed In because they all need tuned. The big drum we have at the minute is excellent, and I for one will be sorry to see it go.

Parade: Blair Memorial, Omagh

Date: 23/07/04

Comments: Well folks the second half of the season is well on the way, and before you know it, it will be all over for another year.
On Friday night we were down in Omagh to take part in Blair Memorial FB's annual parade, and to be quite honest I wasn’t really in the mood to go out with the Band (just not in great form). After the twelfth it seems like we always have the added problem of boys away on holiday and I’m sure that would be the case for the next month or so, so don’t be expecting a big band. But anyway we left Armagh about 7.30pm and made our way down to Omagh, the journey took us about an hour or so, and within twenty minutes of our arrival we were off.
Second band to get away which is always brilliant because it gives me the chance to watch a few other bands, which most of the time I never get to see. Going well I thought for what we had out, but it will be nice when we get all the members back, who are on holidays.

The turnout included: 21 fluters, 12 drummers, 3 big drummers, 3 flags

Parade: Scarva

Date: 13/07/04

Comments: Scarva, Another big day I really enjoy, one of the reasons is we have all our members back. We met in Gilford at 8.30am, and set off about 9.00am to parade the town. Compared to the twelfth we were brilliant, A real Joy to play in the band and how we should be playing all the time, But that’s just how it goes Sometimes. I’m not saying the band was all bad on the twelve, Just in Bessbrook, But anyway completely different Band playing wise In Gilford. The bandmaster was still on standby, in case his new baby started to come and had to take His Car Over to Scarva, Just in case He got the call to go.

We arrived in Scarva about 10.30am and were told to meet in the field for the main parade about 11.00am. I wish the twelfth was like this, everybody meets in one field and then the parade Moves off Together, we all say that Scarva is a far better they than the twelve, and this is one of the reasons, no Big breaks in the Parade. Anyway I always go down to a wee house on the edge Of Scarva, For a cup of tea before we move off in the morning, they Must make a complete fortune.

32 + 16 In Scarva was a welcome sight, the bandmaster was running about trying to pinpoint the one flute that he heard was out Of tune, (It wasn’t mine By the way). We were one of the first bands out of the field, everything going well and to plan.

Met back in the field for 3.30pm for the return Journey home, for me the band was better in the morning, but not much. This year for what ever reason we were out behind portadown District, who get the train over to Scarva, and when we got to the bottom of the town, the girl’s had to push the crowd out of the way, well done to them. Straight onto the bus and back over to Gilford, for the last parade of the day.

In Gilford We made a couple of changes to the band, both are lead Drummer and number 24 fluter (fusiliers big drummer) Were Both on the big drum. The bandmaster, who was on the side Drum, went back to the flute. And number 1 + 2 big drummers moved forward and took a side each. Number 2 Big drummer had our lead tips jacket on which was miles to small for him,he would need two jacket's put together, but very funny to see.
The flag girl’s were in a straight line across the road, After the parade I asked them what to call this formation, I was told by number 4 It is called the “Gossip line”(i wonder why). A few of the boys had a chance to do lead tip, with all performing OK.

Comments: Drumderg are always looking for new recruits, if you have considered joining a flute Band, why not try us. All you need to do, is ask one of the members of the band and they will direct you to one of our officers, who are really very friendly and helpful (well most of them).

Parade: Twelfth

Date: 12/07/04

Comments: The twelfth is one of the big days I really look forward to in the year and of course this year was the same, I only wish we had a bigger band out but what can you do. Some of our boys had to go with the orange because they hold office; the boys from the fusiliers had to parade with them, and also over the last couple of weeks Drumderg and 3 member’s have parted company. So that left us with 11 drummer's 24 flute's 2 big drummer's which is brilliant, but I still would like the full squad out as anybody would.

We set off from our own hall about 10.30pm and walk to the bus, which was parked at Annvale. I thought the bands playing was just OK in keady,

I got the chance to step out of the band to listen, because the bandmaster had forgotten the whistle, and ordered me to get one out of the back of his car. The two or three tune's I heard were played well, but for me I think we could play better.

Onto the bus at Annvale and off to Bessbrook. the bandmaster's wife was expecting a baby, so he was on standby and had to take his car. Keady orange district had all planned to meet in markethill before going on to Bessbrook, and that's were we picked the bandmaster up.

We arrived in Bessbrook About 11.50, and were asked to stay on the bus because the drop off point was at the Bottom of the doctors hill, which we were all happy to do. The band-master phoned our lead drummer because he was meeting us in Bessbrook, it give the bandmaster time To Get him sorted. I think we spent about 40 minutes on the bus waiting before we decided to get out and walk (a lot quicker). We started walking about 12.50pm and didn’t finish until about 2.20pm. On the way around we came across some of our boy's, who were with the fusiliers for the day and they gave us a big cheer, which some of our boys would describe as “gross”.

The bands playing in Bessbrook was hopeless, not good at all.

The orange always provides the tea and sandwiches in the field for the boys and girls with the band, which I always look forward to but one of the Orangeman was not happy, because all he got was salad sandwiches which he doesn't like at all (but i do, 'nice').

At four O'clock I made my way back to the field for the return journey. As usual the lambegs were in the field to tune up, which I don’t like.
I don’t mind one or two lambegs playing together, it’s when there are 30 or so in the field playing different tunes on all sides, just gets on my nerves. It’s the same with drummers at parades before we move off. I'll be talking to somebody and sure enough there will be the drummers, beating the life out of their drum's beside where i'm standing, (idiots).

As usual keady was the last district to leave the field on the twelve, I think it was about 630pm went we were getting onto the bus.
I know that Ulsterbus haven't enough buses for the twelve. But I do feel that the parade should all meet in one Field, then parade out to the main demonstration field, this would make the twelfth a better parade to watch. On the way home the first lodges out of field, should be the nearest to the main demonstration Not the furthest away, which seems to be the way it Happens.

We arrived back in keady, this time the district parades from Annvale to keady orange hall, and we continue to walk to our own hall, on out the road. The band for the first time decided they were going to play, despite being down 6 Members. I can’t complain about keady, (the best we had played all day) we were playing very well, well done to all who were in keady.

The orange had put on a Barbecue, for the boys and themselves which I was glad of, thanks to them.

God Save the Queen

Parade: Bessbrook fun day

Date: 10/07/04

Comments: The band was asked by Bessbrook orange to do a fun day on the Saturday before the twelfth which we happily agreed to do. This is the second year that the orange in county Armagh have organized events on the run-up to the twelfth (which I think is a brilliant idea). We met in Bessbrook about 3.30pm and led a parade of 30 or so kids in fancy dress round the town and to the field.

Parade: Ballyrea Boyne Defenders

Date: 01/07/04

Comments: Ballyrea Boyne Defenders is always a parade I enjoy and look forward to in the year, this year was no Exception (it's like a mini Scarva).

On Monday night at practice we got the loan of a big drum from our good friend Ron. He has always reckoned that Drumderg need a good big drum because our own is not good enough, and he's right. For about an hour we had the two big drums playing side by side, to see which one was the best. Of course everybody agreed that it was Ron’s with number three big drummer as a joke, putting our own in the bin. Ron has give us a loan of his drum, to see what it's like in the band, and hopefully persuade the bandmaster we need a new drum.

That is one of the reasons I was looking forward to Thursdays parade, and I wasn't disappointed.
It took about three tunes to get the ring out of the head's, but after that the drum was brilliant.

Colour party were brilliant as usual, drum corps the same, our flute core I think you can call lazy on Thursday night.

Parade: Ballinahinch

Date: 25/06/04

Comments: After Mountnorris we made our way over to Ballynahinch for the protestant boy’s parade. Because I had begged a lift with one of our drummers, I arrived in Ballynahinch about 9.30pm, parked the car, got out to get ready. It wasn't the warmest of nights so after putting my jacket on, I did the natural thing to try and keep my hands warm. To my surprise I still had the keys of number 2 big drummer in my pocket (lol) sorry to him again, maybe next time I’ll get it right.

I thought the band played much better in Ballynahinch and number 3 big drummer was up to his old tricks again, first of all breaking a bass drum stick and then bursting a head. I don't think I should give him the credit for that head because when the stick broke he continued to try and play the big drum with it, and the stick left its mark on the head. But he seem to think he should receive the credit for it, because he turned to me and showed me four fingers (I hope it was four).

We got a spare head of Ballyhalbert Which I would like to thank them for.

The turnout included: 23 fluters, 13 drummers, 3 big drummers, 5 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: John Hunter Memorial Mountnorris

Date: 25/06/04

Comments: John Hunter Memorial Mountnorris, Was the first of two parades on Friday night that Drumderg attended. we arrived by bus about 8.00 pm, and within 10 or 15 minutes we were ready to go, this would make the second night in a row that Drumderg has managed to be the first visiting band to parade. anybody who knows us will tell you we are not the best at getting away at local parades, we always seem to be waiting on somebody, maybe this is the start of a change for us, as the old saying goes "don't hold your breath".

I was just about two get into line when our number 2 big drummer asked me to keep his keys in my pocket.
I think it was the end of last year at Kilkeel he had asked me to do the same thing, I manage to bring his keys back to Armagh, leaving him there (LOL), so he said to me he didn't want a repeat performance and I should give him the keys after Mountnorris, "No problem" I said.

I thought the band was just OK in Mountnorris. number 2 big drummer claimed his first head of the season, but he has still a bit of work to do to catch number 3 who has claimed 3 heads this season.

some of our boys chose to drive to both parades on Friday night, and after we had paraded Mountnorris I managed to get a lift with number 8 drummer, but I was still made pay for the bus.
no messing about in Mountnorris, straight into the car and on to Ballinahinch.

The turnout included: 20 fluters, 10 drummers, 3 big drummers, 5 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Pride of Stranmore , Gilford

Date: 22,06,04

Comments: Can I just apologize to all those who read my weekly reports, and for the lack of updates on the website. My excuse is that I have been very busy (lol) and have found it hard to find a minute to write up our reports. I'd also like to apologize for this article because it is all done from memory and have forgotten what happen on the night. But I would Ask you all to remember that I have the memory of a goldfish (what was I saying!)

It’s not the first time for Drumderg playing in Gilford as we take the black on the 13th of July, but I think it’s the first time I have been at a band parade in Gilford. There was a band in Gilford in the early 1990 (Gilford true blues) but unfortunate, it went off the road about ten are so years ago.

A new generation has taken on the job of providing a band for Gilford and it's great to see so many bands turning up a supporting this new band in the town.

The host band Pride of Stranmore was the first to parade the town on Tuesday evening, but the thing that really surprises me is, we were the first visiting band away. Anybody who knows Drumderg will know that this is a very unusual phenomenon for us, as we are usually waiting on one are two of our big drummers. Because our big drum had lost a few of its keys in portadown, we had to take our old drum out for Gilford. As I was saying first away very unusual.

As I had suspected would happened one of the heads went in the big drum (number 3 big drummer again) and we have no more right sized heads for that drum. Lucky enough because of the traffic we were able to have about 15 minutes break and got Pride of Stranmore's big drum.

That’s all I can remember folks, sorry

Parade: Portadown

Date: 19/06/04

Comments: For the second weekend in a row we were in portadown for the True Blues FB annual parade. I had the feeling all day we were going to get wet in portadown, but I was totally wrong (thank goodness). A cold night in portadown but still there was a good turnout from our boys even though they don't like the cold (It takes too long to get your flute warmed up).

I thought we took a long time to get going on Saturday night, and with keys from the big drum flying off, it didn't help the situation (I think 4 broke off altogether).

The girl's could teach the boys how to march and are a big part of the band that can't be done without. But they weren't amused the other night when the drummers try to tell them to stop because they were to close to the band in front (it should be 100 meters). I can see why they were angry with the drummers and the bandmaster has already told them off. If you feel you are to close to a band, mark time until they get away from you. There will be times when you will not be able to do this like the twelfth or Bangor day but there's nothing you can do there.

The band did pick up on the way back down the town, and did play to what I've come to expect from them.
The big drum needs a bit of work I think, just not enough of a bang off it for me, I haven't heard a bass drum I like this year. Ever since they started making the batter head's for big drums, they have destroyed the sound of big drums everywhere (only my opinion).

The turnout included: 31 fluters, 14 drummers, 3 big drummers, 5 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Drumderg

Date: 18/06/04

Comments: I just would like before I start to thank everybody who was at our parade on Friday night. I know it's not much of a parade to march in. Many people ask the question, "Why we stay in keady"? The way I answer that is, republicans over the years would have the world believe that there are no Protestants in south Armagh. Drumderg and other bands from the area prove them wrong. people have said to me " if you went to Armagh and had a band Parade in Armagh think of the money you would correct, that might be true, but I would see that has giving in just for the sake of the few pound. To use a saying from another well known bands-man “we are exactly what it says on the drum, "KEADY!"

I arrived at the hall shortly after 6.30PM to see a lot of activity going on. The bandmaster was running about giving his usual orders to whoever he could. Some of our boys were putting flags up on telegraph posts (rather them than me). Others were giving number 21 fluter a hand to put up the tent for the burger stall; some were just walking about in a wee world of their own. The bandmaster had already given out to everybody what they were to do on the night, so I cleared off to my spot at the start of the parade, behind the barricades. You wouldn't believe how many people want to go up the street to the nearest shop or ATM machine in band uniform, not a very good idea.

48 bands on the night, more than I had expected to be there, it's been a while from there was so many bands in keady and it’s great to see. There were bands there for the first time: Lisburn young defenders, Dollingtown, crimson star, east Belfast to name just a few. There were also 3 but new bands that have started up this year, Pride of Prince William, Ballynahinch Young Loyalists and Pride of Stranmore Gilford who are having their first band parade on Tuesday night, which we will be attending. its along time from I have seen bands lined up on the half miles parade route from end to end, great to see.

We formed up about 10.45pm and paraded down to the hall. To be quite honest I didn't think we were playing well (to cold) and I know I was looking forward to getting a burger from the stall, was I disappointed. 500 burgers and not one left. Just like to thank the girls who helped on the burger stall, we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to the independent judges, sorry we didn't keep you a burger Ron, next time maybe.

Thank you all for your support, No Surrender

Parade: Armagh True Blues

Date: 12/06/04

Comments: Straight after portadown we were back in Armagh for the true blues annual parade. One of the most memorable things for me on the night was the amount of drumsticks are drummers broke. it was the same last year in Armagh, at least they didn't break them all in the same spot as last year (idiots) I had three spare sticks in my pocket, somebody else had a few more and that was still not enough for the troops. I don't know how many times I have to tell them not to hit the side of the drum. But the old joke about drummers is true. What’s the difference between a drum machine and a drummer? You only have to punch it into a drum machine once. My last thought on this is "save the rain forests".

Anyway we didn't start in our usual place beside the museum because police had a land rover across the road so we had to start beside the orange hall. With the warm-up we had in portadown, I knew the band was going to be playing well, the band played far better than I had expected (excellent performance). I seen a video clip at the brothers house, we were coming up the mall playing my old man going very very well, I must say.

Number 3 big drummer must have been in a real destructive mood on Saturday night because he put the head through, that's the second this year for him (playing well). Number 2 reckoned it was because he never played in portadown, and had more energy. We got the band off the road to get a new head in the drum. I thought the bands behind us would walk on passed, they must have thought we were just having a break because they never came past.

As I said before, brilliant parade in Armagh and the band was playing very well.

The turnout included: 32 fluters, 17 drummers, 3 big drummers, 6 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Portadown

Date: 12/06/04

Comments: Saturday night before Armagh we were in portadown for their mini 12th. We were told to be in portadown for 6.15pm because the orange were supposed to be moving off at 6.30 sharp (aye right). 7.00pm came and went, and still no movement, we finely moved off about 7.05pm.

We were just getting into the swing of things when number 3 big drummer strap broke (the second this year) in the middle of a tune, the other two big drummers moved in to rescue the situation. Number 1 drummer kept the beat going and number 2 put the drum on, all this without missing a beat. So 3 was out of action for a bit while he got another strap. Personally I think he was glad to be able to get out of the long walk this year in Portadown.

There was a brilliant crowd on the street in portadown this year. It’s great to see people coming back on to the streets to watch the Orangemen, also an excellent turnout of the Orangemen.

Parade: Pride of the Hill

Date: 11/06/04

Comments: Friday night we were in Rathfriland for the pride of the hill's parade. After a bit of a wait in the queue of bands we were off. The first tune was called (old citizen) which I think we didn't play that well. Everything was played alright just no swing; I didn't think we played well all night (average). I was talking to the bandmaster and a few of the boys after the parade and they thought the same as me.

Before the Parade has started, I got stung for £10, there's a new CD out 'In Tune For Charity'. Flute bands from different parts of Ulster, England and Scotland have made a CD for charity, definitely worth the money. Bands have donated tracks from their own CD's, so if you get a chance buy this CD you will not be disappointed.

Parade: Pride of the Valley Broomhedge

Date: 05/05/06

Comments: Pride of the Valley Broomhedge, had a great parade in Moira on Saturday night. It was a lot warmer than last year's parade I can tell you and a wee change to their route, but a great parade all the same.

The most memorable thing for me on the night is the fact that out of 36 fluter's, we had 18 missing. 5 out of the missing have an air tight excuse and said they wouldn't be able to attend the parade on Friday night , but the rest let us down. I know some will say "what are you complaining about”, my point is this; if you're in a band and that band is going out you should be there, if at all possable. There’s no point in being in a band just to say I'm in a band and not go, what's the point of that. Some of our boys are genuine when they say they can't go but others aren't. Then we have boys who say "I'll be there" and just don't turn up, you know of phone call is common courtesy. I have been saying to the bandmaster, from the start of the year about some of our boys not pulling there weight and saying that we need to lift some uniforms. But our bandmaster is not like me, he is willing to give boys chance after chance to prove themselves. but his cool head is starting to heat up, after the 12th you might see us parting with some of the boys.

The 18 loyal Drumderg fluter’s who did turn up, have to say they played well. A lot better than Friday night (but isn't that always the case). With 12 drummers out on Saturday night, I thought our flute's will never be able to match the volume of the drum corps. I was totally wrong, are first tune of the night was one we call "old citizen". any nerves I had were put to rest, because I knew from then, the fluting was better than it was on Friday night.

The drum corps was marvellous as usual.

Colour party brilliant as usual.

Once we got going I really enjoyed this parade and will definitely look forward to it next year.

Parade: Kilcliney

Date: 04/05/04

Comments: Kilcliney's parade on Saturday night, well what can I say brilliant, a lot of hard work was put in by the leadership of their band and I'm sure the members of the band as well, who should be proud of themselves for such a great parade . I only wish we could have a parade like that in keady, but that can never happen because of the town and restrictions on are parade. Kilcluney is the only band in Armagh who could achieve a parade of this standard in the county. I for one would not like to be doing over 70 parades in a year.

Drumderg were asked by the bandmaster to meet in markethill for 8.00pm. Which usually means that some of the boys think that he means 8.30pm, and one or two think it's 9.00pm. But for a change I think we started about 8.20pm and bar standing for about 15 minutes, we were off.

I had been looking forward to this parade all week, because I knew it's one of the parade we are assured of a good turnout from our members and I was not disappointed. one of our members who just brought his new baby home from hospital was even their (congratulations to him by the way). It was nearly a full turnout of fluter's bar 4 (excuses: work, hospital treatment, boy’s brigade and one on holidays). The flag Girl's were all their, they have been magnificent this year and I can't complain. A full turnout from our drum corps who are playing well this season.

I thought we played well from the start but I still reckon the bass drum is not loud enough, well that's how it seems when I'm in the band, then again I seen a video clip on the united band forum and it seem to be great, it seems to be throwing all the sound forward if you know what I mean. The bandmaster and his good friend (M) seem to think maybe 17 drummers is too many for one bass drum I don't know. Another good friend of the bandmaster (R) has offered their big drum to see if there is any difference, so we'll see.

Kilcluney are also making a DVD of their parade priced £10.00 if all reports are right. I saw two cameras on the night, One static watching the band marching up the hill and the other one floating about on the ground walking up and down the ranks. I seen a DVD like this of SFYL parade last year, and it was first class and I think Kilcliney's will be well worth the buying.

Parade: keady, church service

Date: 30/05/04

Comments: Sunday we where in keady for the Royal Arch Purple church service, it’s the first time Drumderg has done this parade. Our own lodge organized this parade so it was natural that the band was used to lead the parade. I arrived in Keady about 2.30pm and the rain was lashing down. I parked the car and seen the bandmaster walking about in the rain, checking to see all the boys were there (rather him than me). Eventually, the time had come for me to venture out into the rain and I knew I had to get wet. Luckily the rain was only a drizzle now, I still wasn't happy, but still, onward and upward.

24+11 for today's parade not bad and I reckon in total their was about 70 Orangemen on parade which is good for Keady, I just hope there's more for the annual service in July. The parade started off from Annvale Gardens and went up to Keady Orange Hall where the service was being held. We started off playing our first hymn. The rain stop the Sun came out and stayed out for the rest of the afternoon.

The Orangemen and the band all squeezed in to keady orange hall. Some of our boys were the last to get a seat, with two that had to make their way to the front. On their way past me I heard one of them saying “a bit of fire and brimstone today" he wasn't wrong. The Free Presbyterian minister was on form as usual (brilliant service). There was a word of testimony from a well known character from the area also brilliant. Some of the boys that don't go to church regularly (TUT TUT) came away with something to think about, and even thought it was an excellent service fire and brimstone and all.

The service was ended in the usual manner an the national anthem was song (all three versus) which I love the second
O lord our God, arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their popish tracks,
On thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.

Parade: Bangor junior orange

Date: 29/05/04

Comments: Drumderg had the pleasure of taking Keady junior orange to Bangor on Saturday; I think this is the fourth or fifth year we've had the opportunity to go to Bangor, a day I really enjoy. We met before 9AM on the mall outside the orange hall for the first parade of the day around Armagh. Because two of our bass drummers weren't with us, our spare bass drummer was used (number 5 fluter) and also the bandmaster decided he would take a drum for the morning Parade. That left us with 24+12.

before we moved off, the superintendent of the juniors asked the band if they wouldn't mind, he would like a picture of the band and the juniors on the mall,(we have some great posers in the band "you know who you are". unfortunately because some of the boys were at a party the night before, our lead drummer missed the picture. in-fact about 8.45PM the bandmaster was checking his list to see if all the boys were there and realized we had no lead drummer, so he phoned to see where he was(still in bed, I think).

Bandmaster: are you up yet?

Lead drummer: Why!

Lead drummer: oh aye, Bangor! (lol)

we formed up in 4’s ( I hate 4’s) behind our neighbours from markethill, Kilcluney they seem to have a good show of members out, Mullabrack Accordion, then Drumderg and behind us Tamnamore.

I thought the band was just OK nothing special on Saturday morning, think Some of the boys were still half asleep (the sinners out all night, but who am I to judge)from the orange hall we paraded up the mall along barrack street, Scott street and back round to the orange hall, in my estimation about 1 mile. The bus was totally packed out, some had to be turned away because there was no room.

We picked one of our fluters on the way to Bangor. Just made it in time for the parade because the bus driver stayed in the wrong lane which meant we had to go up to Lisburn on the old Lisburn road, as I have said, we arrived just in time. We formed up in 5's this time, because of the extra fluter, we also met one of our drummers in Bangor. The bandmaster now decided to flute, that meant we were up to 26+12. The colour party had just the 3 girl's out but I think they were brilliant.

The band played much better in Bangor then Armagh, (as one of are fluter put it "GROSS").

A longer parade than usual in Bangor but I have to admit I like it. Instead of stopping at the orange hall, you go back to the start and put all your stuff back on the bus.

3.00pm we had to do it all over again, back on the bus and then parade through Armagh. This time there was only 2 bands, us and Tamnamore. A few of the boys who didn't go to Bangor brought their children into see the band (I think it's an excuse to watch the band and see the difference outside). One of the boys also brought his video camera in, I seen a bit of it and it looks good. With the bandmaster playing the Flute in Armagh we had 25+11, someone made the comment it made the band look small, short and stumpy (just like me).

All in all a great day.

There is a great video clip of Drumderg on the United Loyalist band forum.

Parade: kinallen

Date: 28/05/04

Comments: The second parade of the night was kinallen fb Dromore. The bandmaster wanted to get the band down to Dromore as soon as he could to beat the logjam, unfortunately it wasn't to be. Because of restrictions on the parade and the traffic, we were left standing out the back road for maybe an hour, so that the bands at the back of the parade could be cleared. It’s one of them thinks that happens because of parade restrictions. The police don't help matters when they push all the cars down the same road as the parade. A good idea for the police would be to use local police to direct the traffic, instead of ones that don't know the area at all.

The band I thought were playing very well on Friday night and I must congratulate them on their playing, good job. The big drum was sounding well and both big drummers going well. Number 2 big drummer was in England for the weekend (he gets about). Our lead drummer broke a stick, that's a first for him this year. Just as we were just about to head back into the town, number 13 drum burst so that was him out. Flute's all going well I thought. With so many stops and starts we couldn't ask the boys to stand at attention while we waited to move on, in some places we were stopped for at least 10 minutes. So the bandmaster called "stand easy" and we all had a wee seat (and why not). Somebody made a comment to myself that he seen us coming down the wee narrow street, (were we had to wait while bands finished their last tune of the night) some of are boys sat down he thought they were going to sleep. (LOL)

Number 2 flag carrier was not out this weekend so we had no orange standard with us at all.

Parade: Mullabrack

Date: 28/05/04

Comments: Two parades on Friday night meant that the bandmaster got the boys down to markethill for Mullabrack's annual parade, as near to 7.30pm as he could. With the band started the night with one of the four new tunes (off the top) I think it went OK.

One thing that really annoys me about some people is the comment that none of our band is from KEADY. Yes some of our boys are not from KEADY, but if blinkered people would open their eyes to see we have boys from the KEADY and I have to give them credit for being in a loyalist flute band from KEADY. Maybe it's because this person doesn't know the boys from KEADY, on the other hand would they want to know him? it has to be a good thing that people are willing to travel to be a member of Drumderg, there might be at touch of jealousy there I don't know. There is no rule that states you must only have boys from your own town in your band, if there was a lot of bands would not be on the road. If this was the case, the same person would not be in the band he is in today and is a wee bit hypocritical when he starts throwing these comments about, don't you think.

OK back to the parade in markethill. Because we had another parade to do we could only manage to do part of the parade (in hindsight we could have done it all, I'll tell you about that later). I thought the band played very well in markethill...

Parade: Ballykeel

Date: 22/05/04

Comments: Drumderg were in Ballymena on Saturday night for Ballykeel's annual parade. It's the second time this weekend we have needed a bus, and once again up the M1, around the world for a short cut. We arrived in Ballymena in good enough time and within 15 minutes the band was ready to go.

As we had only 24 fluters on Saturday night, stag parties, birthday parties, football dinner’s work, and some with no excuse whatsoever, we were in 4's. Still I thought as I was putting one of my learner fluters out for the first time, I would manage to get into the second row of fluters. There I was standing on the side of the road as I waited for my spot in the second row of fluters.
My name was called "right you walk there" straight back into the front row and to cap it all the wee slabber was directly behind me. (LOL)

For me, I didn't think the band played that well until we were near the bridge and the boys seen they had to play against other bands. Pack up your troubles was the tune called and all of a sudden all the boys switched on, the band got into its rhythm and we never looked back, thank goodness. I see the local FENIAN'S were out to see how much they could be offended in one night "scum bags" with all their sectarian abuse.

11.30pm it was all over and the bus headed home, well that's what we thought. One of our boys forgot to get on the bus and was left behind. We were about six miles from Ballymena when somebody realized he was Missing. So we turned the bus around to get him. The bandmaster ask him what happened and he said "I seen the bus going past me but didn't realize you were on your way home", what a numnut!

Parade: DONAGHADEE FUSILIERS

Date: 21/05/04

Comments: Donaghadee was the setting for tonight's parade, it's the first time Drumderg has been in Donaghadee and it's the first time that I have been there myself. I was lucky enough to get offered a lift with one of the boys so I missed out on the bus journey (happy days). But still it was terrible the amount of de'tours we had to take because of the M1 being closed. I reckon it must have taken us about 2 hours; at least I had a comfortable seat.

As I was saying it was the first time for me in Donaghadee. Driving down the Main Street I could see that the streets were just made for flute bands. I love to parade streets that have buildings on either side of them, the echo of the band is just brilliant so knowing the band we had out, I knew it would be a good night for us

When the band arrived we headed down to the car park, to meet up with the rest of the band. I was just glad to get a few minutes on the bus to get warm again (that was a cold night I'M telling you).
We formed up and started off but we didn't get very far before we had to stop. We played well right from the start, fluters playing well, drum corps playing well, big drum was a bit dead for me, but new heads are always hard to get right.

The Colour party chose tonight to fly the flags, couldn't have picked a worse night to do this, their arms must have been killing them, but it has to be said it looks a lot better.

One incident that did annoy me was some idiot thinking he could walk through the ranks of the band. When he was told not to he said "I'm only trying to get to the bar" fair enough just walk around the back of the band. We had to tell him 2 or 3 times and then some other idiot thought he would like to walk through the band. Anybody connected with bands knows you just don't walk through bands, its bad manners. So the first boy walked around the back of the band, next thing I knew he was walking down through the left hand rank of the band, needless to say he was grabbed by the scuff of the neck and put out. How many times the people need to be told.

When this was all going on number 5 and 26 fluters where having a bit of a conversation.

Number 5: I hope the band moves down a bit, and your man tries to walk through our rank!

Number 26: why?

Number 5: because if your man walks through our rank you can hit him (LOL)
I think the band played the best they have this year in Donaghadee, but I'm sure somebody will tell me different. We have a bit more work to do with the halt after we play a tune. But it's a Colour party thing that needs to be look at. We didn't get to do the whole parade much to my disappointment, it's a thing that is happening more and more at band parades this year.

The turnout included: 31 fluters, 16 drummers, 3 big drummers, 6 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: sons of William Rathfriland

Date: 14/05/04

Comments: Just one parade this weekend, sons of William Rathfriland. I didn't think the band played that well this weekend, it might have been because we were down in numbers (I hope not). I hope Drumderg boys aren't thinking because we have good numbers this year they can relax and take it easy, this is not the case. Every member most put an equal amount of effort into the band, you should take the bandmaster as your example, if the band is out then he is out it's that simple. We have a few members in our band that have achieved this thing, just like at the turnout page for last year and you will see this. There were some this weekend that could not go because of exams or work that's totally understandable. I would be the first to encourage people to do well in exams, you are the future. To those people who just did not turn of because you can't be bothered you are the ones who I mean. Get your finger out.

just one more thing anybody still owning money please get it in. there was two new heads put in the bass this weekend, £25.00 for each head, not to mention each head has to be painted more money, and as well as that new keys are needed as well. It’s only a few this year but we still need your money.

As I said before I didn't think the band Played that well this weekend, I think we played two tunes well on Friday night hopefully next weekend will be a different story. The bandmaster has to the tunes for the twelfth so look out for then if.

Parade: independent orange church parade

Date: 09/05/04

Comments: Sunday's independent orange church parade in largan, is becoming an annual event for Drumderg. We gathered in the car park for 2.30pm, and got ready to parade out to largan free Presbyterian church. I think there was about 20 or 30 independent Orangemen with us, down from other years but still a good turnout for the orange.

The minister for today's service came from Lisburn free Presbyterian, I think this its second or third time he has taken the service, which is always inspiring to me and to some of the rest of the boys. One of his comments I think we can all use "we do not have the right to give away our God given traditions" very true.

The band played very well and all the hymns were very good.

included: 20 fluters, 8 drummers, 2 big drummers, 1 drum major

Parade: East Belfast Protestant Boys

Date: 08/05/04

Comments: Saturday night we were at East Belfast, for the Protestant Boys annual parade. It was the second time this weekend the band needed a bus, the thing that really surprised me it was Ulsterbus! But I can't complain this time.

Earlier in the day two members of Drumderg along with two other local flute bands, passed their first aid exam. I would like to congratulate them on their achievement.

With our flute corp down I was a bit anxious before the parade, my concerns were would the flutes be able to hold the 16 drummers we had out? I need not have worried because I think we played brilliant on the night, a lot better than Friday night. We must have played our new tunes 3 or 4 times, the boys seem happy to play them and the reaction from the crowd was very pleasing.

Because of the Sunday parade there will be no band practice on Monday night.

The turnout included: 27 fluters, 16 drummers, 3 big drummers, 6 flags and 1 drum major

Parade: Skeogh

Date: 07/05.04

Comments: Friday night we were down in Dromore for Skeogh's parade. I must admit that I thought the band didn't play well for the first half of the parade. That’s the sort of thing that happens when you don't have a parade the weekend before and then no band practice on the Monday night. The band master took the opportunity on Friday night to practice some of the hymns we play, out round the back roads. After a break we seem to play a lot better than we were. Coming back into the square for the second time, down that narrow street I thought the band was far better, just seemed to go a lot smoother.

With our number 2 big drummer away for the weekend, the bandmaster let one of our stand in the big drummers have a go (number 5 fluter), definitely has the talent. It’s also great to have number 14 fluter and number 11 drummer on parade for the first this year, keep it up lads. The bandmaster decided he wanted to flute on Friday night, I think the reason is because it's usually number 5 fluter who calls the tunes but because he was on the big drum, the bandmaster doesn't trust anybody else to call the tunes. We also had a new member out for the first time on Friday night, I think he enjoyed him self. Haven’t got talking to him yet but from what I hear he enjoyed it.

I have to mention the girls; this year so far they have been brilliant. There marching puts us boys to shame, I think they came away with another win, so congratulations to them.

Parade: Enagh

Date: 24.04.04

Comments: Saturday night was markethill for Enagh accordion band. I really can't remember much about this parade because it’s over two weeks now (the lesson here is, not to be so lazy). I can remember number 2 drummer breaking a stick and I thought we played better on Saturday than Friday night. I'm sorry folks that's all I can remember (does anybody read this rubbish anyway).

Parade: Loyal Sons of Benagh

Date: 23/04/04

Comments: Friday night we where in Newry for the Loyal Sons of Benagh 30th Anniversary parade. Because of restrictions imposed by the parades commission, all bands were asked to be on the road before nine o'clock. For once Drumderg were able to meet this restriction and were on parade at about 8.30pm.

Despite the numbers being down a bit from last weekend, we played a lot better. the bass drummers have fixed the problem with the bass drum and have it singing, I must congratulate them on bringing the bang back to Drumderg, you might not believe this but the bass drum is the heartbeat of the band, if you're bass drum is not going well, the effects on the fluters is unbelievable. No matter how much you try to get them going they just can't; but if you have a good bass drum with good men behind it your on a pig's back. (I think they came away with a win).

The new tunes or going well. It was decided after a bit of practice up past the brass monkey to play one of them outside the orange hall (sons of Ulster). I think the bandmaster was confident that we have got it off and is pleased with the fluters playing parts; it just might take a bit longer to come together.

Our drum major won a first place on Friday night so congratulations to him. good performance by the band, keep that up and don't fizzle out on me.

Parade: R.S.V KILKEEL

Date: 17/04/04

Comments: R.S.V KILKEEL parade was the first time we have been on the streets this year. I have been looking forward to this parade all week (couldn't sleep in some cases). The bandmaster told me earlier in the week that we possibly could have a band of 30 and 15 for Kilkeel; this is something that I have never experienced so early in the season. As I was saying I just couldn't wait.

The usual preparations were taken, flutes and drums tuned, everybody told to check their uniform and to make sure it still OK (some of the girls and boys have put on a bit, over the winter). I've managed to get some off so I am OK.

I would say that Saturday's performance was just about average, but it's only the first parade and we can play a lot better. The new tunes the bandmaster has chosen this year are going well but one of them (The sons of Ulster) will take a bit of getting used to. As I was saying the feeling among the boys is that the band can do better. Our lead drummer reckons he himself was not playing at his best the other night. The bandmaster also reckoned we didn't play well tell after the square on the way back.

Our colour party has gone through a bit of a change with our number 2 taking on the role as standard carrier. She seemed to be getting flustered before the parade and she didn't know where she was going after the square on the way back. What I really can't understand is why she asked me, I don't know where I am at the best of times (LOL) the blind leading the blind you could say. But well done to the girls for winning the first prize. All we need now is for our number 5 to get back.

This year I am going to keep a record of those who break drum sticks and our number 2 gets the honour of being the first this year. I suppose I should keep a record of big drummers breaking straps but I think it's a one off. Very funny to watch, there we were playing one of our new tunes when all of a sudden the strap broke! Only for his waist coat the drum would have been on the ground. Our number 1 bass drummer came to his rescue and taking hold of the drum allowed our number 3 to finish the tune.

Comments: Tonight is the first parade for Drumderg this season, it only seems like yesterday I was telling you about our last parade 2003 in Moira. It was a cold night and it seems tonight will be exactly the same with the rain as a bonus.

We ended the season last year with 34 fluter 16 drummer’s 3 big drummers 5 flags 1 drum major. Unfortunately 4 of the boys have decided to call it a day (drummers 6+10 fluters 12+32). I would just like to wish them all the best and thank them for the support they have given to us over the years; I know that they will continue to support Drumderg. From what I've heard there is 3 new drummers out tonight and I think we have 1 new fluter out tonight as well. We also have 2 new flags tonight, I say new but really I should say welcome back to the two girls.

As I said before we have four new tunes on the go this season, tonight will give us a good opportunity to try them out on the march. We have already done this on the road at band practice, but it's out in public were you can't make mistakes you can at band practice.

If anybody has a digital camera and are at the parade can you please take a few pictures of the band for me so I can pop then on the site? I never get the opportunity to step out of the band to take photos, if you do happen to get a photo of the band please feel free to e-mail the band with your photo, it would be much appreciated.

Comments: It's great to see so many at band practice last night, but for all those fluters who have yet to learn those new TUNES it's about time you did.

When the band finishes the last tune the band will stop marching on the last beat(I think POTH do this). The band will stand at attention until the big drummer dismisses the band with a single beat( like we were supposed to do last year but some of you didn't)

You know the band rules, these rules are in place so that drumderg has a future, long after you have left. Remember those coming through the ranks they will most likely be the ones who will be in the band long after you have left.

Here's to a great marching season , it is up to every individual to make this season one of the best so for .

Parade: CLOGHER PROTESTANT BOYS 'BLOOD AND THUNDER'

Date: 20th MARCH
Comments: We had been asked to take part in a band competition by clogher Protestants boys in Ballyknock Orange hall. These types of events have helped us in recent years to improve and keeps us motivated in the winter months. So when we
Return to the streets in April hopefully some of the cobwebs have been blown out of the flutes.

Five bands were present
EAST BELFAST PROTESTANT BOYS,
PRIDE OF THE HILL RATHFRILAND,BALLYHALBERT FB,
STAR OF THE NORTH DOLLINGSTOWNand ourselves. I thought we were playing well on the night but came second to EBPB, who are hard to beat when they're in the form they were in on Saturday night, they were excellent, and I really enjoyed their performance.

The turnout included: 16 fluters, 6 drummers, 2 big drummers

Comments: I've finally found the time in my very hectic life to do some much needed updates , I still have a lot more work to do on the site so keep checking back to see if I have found time to do it. In about two months time Drumderg will be back on the streets DV. We have learned a few new tunes and the band-master has set drumming to all these need tune which. All that remains is for those who have not managed to appear at band practice to learn this new stuff, is to get directions to Keady. I'm sure if they phone the band-master or me, we will all to happy to give directions to the hall.

No surrender
