Drumderg Diary

Name: Ming and Muggs
Parade: Donaghadee Fusiliers
Date: 19th may 22/05/06
Comments: We travelled to Donaghadee on Friday night stopping off for a quick warm up in Markethill which turned into a cool off due to the rain, I thought we played reasonably well in Markethill were we walked with 9 drummers and 22 fluters .Then it was onto the main event of the evening in Donaghadee to support the towns Fusiliers. We arrived in the town at approx 09:40 and the parade was well under way and we found ourselves being practically the last band to parade due to the psni insistence that the parade be over by 10:00pm we were instructed to walk a shortened route which took us only 15 r 20 minutes. However we found our numbers had greatly increased to 15 drums and 28 flutes and we paraded down the main street to raptureous applause from what was in our view the most enthusiastic crowd this season to date. In our opinion the wee band was on fire with a special mention to the fluters as the volume was fantastic this made the hairs stand on the back of your neck a truly first class performance which was quite rightly reflected in the judging and we walked away with 6 first places, these were for best entertaining, drum corp, bass drummer (well done muggs) best visiting best overall best lead tip(well done to the big black man from khasicstan) and the coveted blood and thunder which we felt was fully deserved. We only got to see pride of the hill rathfriland who although down in numbers were fluting to their usual high standard . I noticed a remark on another band site wereby a member from another band said stevie wonder must have been judging at the parade, as far as I’m aware he’s only blind not deaf !!!!surely this would make him the perfect judge.Even the dogs on the street knew we were the clear cut winners on the night, lets just hope all members of the band can maintain this high standard for the rest of the year.

Parade: East Belfast Protestant boys
Date: Sat 13th may 2006
Comments: On Saturday night we attended the annual parade of East Belfast Protestant boys this being one of the parades we look forward to most in the season.
We had a lot to live up to after the previous years success and even with the north west coinciding with the parade we were not found wanting and walked with 14 side drums and 28 fluters by all accounts it was a great night with a very enthusiastic crowd cheering us all around the route.
All in all I would say that our new tunes are really starting to take off and confidence is growing when playing them in front of judges and crowds alike.2ft marine proving to be very popular with the crowd and also the sorcerer which is a personal favourite of mine,
A special mention must go to our colour party who are really starting to shine the hard work is starting to pay off and a few more first places are certainly on the cards.
Of the bands I saw Donaghadee Fusiliers and Pride of the hill Rathfriland were going well and we felt these would prove stiff competition but in the end we walked away with firsts in both blood & thunder and bass drum categories and 2nds in most other categories in our genre, all in all a very successful night for the wee band great crack on the bus on the way home .

These are not the views of drumderg loyalists keady
They are the opinions of ming and muggy so deal with it
God save the wee band not forgetting our glorious queen
Next stop donaghadee……..

Parade: Crossgar
Date: 14th April
Comments: It's been a many of year since Drumderg have paraded Crossgar and to be quite honest I wasn't looking forward to the parade. Some of the boys were in the same mood has myself and it’s showed later on in the playing. Anyway it had been a long week getting ready for the parade Monday night practice Tuesday night the band-master and I had some flutes to tune, Wednesday night I had drumming practice and the band-master was practicing for our new CD with some of the boys. One of the drummers came over to the band-master’s house to tune the drums, Thursday night more flutes to tune and then Friday night going out to the parade. So that's why some of the boys were not in the mood for the parade on Friday night.

I made my way down to the bus for about 7.15pm just wondering if there would be anybody to let the band-master down at the last minute, of course there’s always one or two that will, some with a good reason some without. That’s the reason if you asked the band-master the numbers about half an hour before we parade, all you will get is “we’re all right” you will never get an exact number. Aanother thing I’m not happy with this year is I have no camera man to video the band, ah well, I'll try and get something sorted out so I can put a few clips on the website.

We knew that we were going to play our new tunes tonight and once we had cleared the main road and were not going to be meeting other bands we got stuck in to see how they went. The first two tunes we played were 2 FT MARINE and the Sorcerer both of which I think were played well enough. LONDON’S RETURN and LOYAL CROSSMORE I think are more or less there, ready to go but the rest on the night were very poor but there will get better.

The only part of the band that I was happy with was the Colour party. They were great last year and this year they have taken it further with a bit of formation marching, it’s great to watch and if you get a chance to see it it’s well worth it. One of the girls said to me on the way home, “when is the band going to learn counter marching”, as I said to her we need to teach some of the boys how to walk first. LOL

The Drum Corps wasn’t too bad I suppose, except for the one drummer he managed to break to sticks on the night, I think year I’ll will keep the score on this, so he’s off to a great start.

The flute corps is the big problem at the minute, the old tunes they still do very well. But there’s at least two of the new tunes need some work. The other problem I see with the flute corps is that they do not listen to the drum Corps. But things will change over the year as we get more road practice.

Parade: Cormeen Rising Sons of William
Date: 17/3/06
Comments: Well there you are folks! The marching season has just begun, now its time to see if our winters practice has paid off.. I arrived at Killylea at about half seven and was pleasantly surprised at how many people were about the street and was also pleasantly surprised at how many of my own band were there before me. I parked the car and went up the street to hand back to Cormeen a trophy from last year. After talking to a few people I knew for about 10 minutes I decided it was far far too cold too stand about talking so I headed back to the car to get my hat and the rest of all my stuff. hoping the hat would maybe give me some more warmth, yet again I was wrong!

We finally were told to get in line at about nine. now anybody that knows our boys they know they a disaster at getting into line, and I have no idea why they come to me to ask were they are standing, I’ve No problem finding my, spot front row in the middle. It’s a hard job at best of times , the boys will just not stand still and on top of that to do it in the dark is a complete nightmare. Thankfully ron was on hand to sort the problem out , running about with what looked like a wee flashlight.

On the night we managed to play 4 of are 6 new tunes, we started off the night with one of them, a tune called The Sorcerer. Thought the band didn’t really start playing until we were at the top of Killylea hill, maybe that was something to do with the cold. We Also had a couple of new young lads out for the first time, I believe we need a bit more practice walking them for them to come good, but it does take time.

The Colour party has put in a lot of practice this year and from what I seen in the hall they or very very good. A new flag as well this year St Patrick’s, which is part of the union Jack. I was hoping to see them doing there party piece on Friday night but I was disappointed they didn’t, don’t think they had the room. I was very surprised to see them all out because of one of the girls being at university in England but she was there. Their hard work must have paid off because they came away with a 1st.

The Drum Corps were very sharp and I have no complaints, we had fifteen drums out for the night and going well. We’re down one drummer from last year but I think we have a few coming on.

The Flute Corps

As part of the flute corps, I know I didn’t really play that well until the top of Killylea street, I personally couldn’t feel my finger tip, Thats my excuse and I am sticking to it. With Metal flutes it doesn’t help when it’s cold. 29 flutes on the night which wasn’t too bad, I know of 2 boys that have left the band from last year, haven’t a clue what the numbers are like this year, must make a point of finding that out. As I said before 2 new fluters out on Friday night with more to be put out throughout the year.

The turnout included: 29 fluters, 15 drummers, 2 big drummers, 6 flags
and 1 drum major
